Quick Answer
A helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, known locally as the Flight of Angels, gives you an aerial view of the 1.7-kilometre-wide curtain of water and the Batoka Gorge below. The 12-minute flight covers the falls and gorge. The 25-minute flight extends over the upper Zambezi and its islands.

The Helicopter Flight

The 12-minute helicopter flight takes you directly over Victoria Falls. From the air, you can see the entire 1.7-kilometre width of the falls, the zigzag pattern of the gorges downstream, and the spray column rising hundreds of metres into the sky. It is the only way to see the falls as a whole.

The 25-minute flight adds a sweep over the upper Zambezi River, the islands above the falls, and the surrounding bush. You often spot elephants and hippos from the air. If you can afford the extra cost, the longer flight is worth it.

Flights depart from a helipad about 15 minutes from Victoria Falls town. Most bookings include hotel pickup.

The Microlight

The microlight is a completely different experience. It is a tiny, open-cockpit aircraft with just you and the pilot. You feel the wind, hear the engine, and you are much closer to the falls than the helicopter gets.

The microlight flies lower and slower, which means you get a more intimate view. You can see individual streams of water cascading over the edge, the rainbows forming in the spray, and the detail of the basalt gorge walls. The downside is that it is loud, windy, and not for anyone who gets nervous in small aircraft.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the helicopter if: you want a comfortable, enclosed experience suitable for families and groups, or if you have limited time and want to see as much as possible.

Choose the microlight if: you want an adventure experience, you are a keen photographer who wants shots without glass reflections, or you want to feel the wind and spray. The microlight is more of an adventure activity than a scenic flight.
